New care community for Bridport takes a step forward
Where you live can really affect your health and wellbeing, but there’s a financial cost too. In England alone, it’s estimated that poor quality housing costs the NHS £1.4 billion a year.
That’s why Dorset Council is thinking differently about how to use land we own, under a programme called Building Better Lives.
In the next phase of an exciting project in Bridport, the council is working with experienced developers and social housing providers, to plan, finance and build a new care community. It will include a new care home with nursing and dementia facilities, supported living accommodation, and accommodation for key health and social care staff.
The new development will meet future demand for care services in Bridport and the surrounding area. It will provide care and support to help people remain independent for as long as possible.
The modern facilities will be built on land owned by Dorset Council along West Bay road and around Flood lane.
Cllr Laura Miller, Portfolio holder for Adult Social Care and health at Dorset Council said:
“This is a really exciting opportunity for Bridport. The current facilities in the town need modernising and don’t offer the right outcomes for the people living there. The new development will not only offer more choice of accommodation to people who need support, but it will also offer truly affordable housing for people working on the campus”.
Shaw Healthcare, a nationally recognised provider of quality Care and Nursing Home services, has been appointed to design, build and run the brand-new state-of-the-art Nursing and Dementia Care Home. Shaw bring a wealth of experience in both the construction and operation of modern care facilities.
Geraint Evans, Commercial & Development Director commented:
“We are delighted to have won the contract and look forward to seeing the Bridport development thrive. Shaw places significant emphasis on person-centred care which aligns with Dorset’s Council values and together we look forward to delivering the type of care that we would want for our own loved ones.”
BICL, a partnership of Morgan Ashley Care Developments and East Boro Housing Trust, will build and manage a range of housing across the sites, all of which will be affordable and aimed at local people who need support to remain independent in their own home or who need a helping hand to afford housing in order to be able to live and work in the care and health sector in Bridport.
Laurence Basturkmen, Managing Director of Morgan Ashley said:
“The next steps will be public consultation and planning applications, before starting on site. We will be working with the local community, East Boro Housing Trust and Dorset Council to realise what is an innovative scheme, joining health, housing and care together in one location, to facilitate better outcomes for all”
Both organisations will work closely with Dorset Council to develop the plans ready for a formal Planning Application. They will talk with the people who are currently being cared for at Sidney Gale House, and their families, and consult widely with people in the Bridport area to help shape these plans. The buildings should be completed by Spring 2021.
